What’s the Cost of a CV Axle Replacement?

If you’ve noticed a clicking noise when you turn or a grease stain on the inside of your tire, there’s a good chance your CV axle is wearing out. It’s one of the more common repairs we see, and it often leaves the driver with the question of “how much will this cost to repair”?

The honest answer is “it depends,” but we can give you real numbers to work with.

CV axle boot connected to wheel

Average Cost Range

A CV axle replacement typically runs $200 to $500 per axle when you bring it to a shop, including parts and labor. Front-wheel-drive vehicles have two front axles, and many also have rear axles on all-wheel-drive models, so if both sides need work at once, expect to pay closer to $400–$1000 total.

A few things push that number up or down:

  • Vehicle make and model: Luxury or import vehicles often use pricier axle assemblies, while parts for common domestic models tend to be more affordable.
  • New vs. remanufactured parts: A remanufactured axle is usually cheaper and perfectly reliable, while a brand-new OEM part costs more but may come with a longer warranty.
  • Labor time: Some vehicles have easy axle access; others require dropping subframes or disconnecting more suspension components, which adds shop time.
  • Additional damage: If a torn CV boot went unnoticed for too long, grease can contaminate the brakes or get flung onto other components, adding to the repair bill.

Why CV Axles Wear Out

CV stands for “constant velocity,” and these axles are what transfer power from your transmission to your wheels while still allowing smooth movement as your suspension travels and you steer. Each end is wrapped in a rubber boot packed with grease to keep the joint lubricated.

Over time, that boot can crack from age, road debris, or just general wear. Once it splits, grease leaks out and dirt gets in, and the joint starts grinding itself apart. This is why catching a torn boot early is so much cheaper than waiting for the whole axle to fail.

Signs You Need a New CV Axle

  • Clicking or popping noises when turning, especially at low speed
  • Grease splattered on the inside of a tire or wheel
  • Vibration that gets worse as you accelerate
  • A visibly torn or cracked rubber boot
  • Clunking when shifting from drive to reverse

If you’re hearing any of these, it’s worth getting it looked at before the joint fails completely. A failed CV axle can leave you stranded and, in worse cases, cause a loss of power to that wheel while driving.

Can You Just Replace the Boot Instead?

Sometimes, if you catch a torn boot early enough before grease has contaminated the joint, a boot replacement alone can save you money. It’s a smaller job than swapping the whole axle. But once the joint itself has been running dry or has metal-on-metal wear, a boot replacement won’t fix the underlying damage, and you’ll be back in the shop again soon. We’ll always let you know which option actually makes sense for your situation rather than upselling you on parts you don’t need.
